I have written a lot in the past about what I see as the future of journalism from my perspective, having spent 25-plus years in the PR world dealing with media of all types. In the good "old" days, the journalists were so savvy and knowledgeable you had to really, really sharpen your "pencil" before approaching them.
Then, in what seemed like an overnight change, the media world that I knew went away and these incredibly experienced journalists were losing their jobs left and right. And as replacements, it was either someone fresh out of school or in the worst case, no one at all left to cover whatever beat you were pitching.
Don’t get me wrong; some of the best journalists I’ve met are the youngest! I am all for that, if they do their homework and are prepared etc...
But, the other trend that I saw taking shape, albeit a little slowly, was industry professionals authoring their own content and becoming a new type of journalist. Yes, it’s the same as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal ; I get that. But, they were occupying a growing niche in the social media landscape and providing some really good content. That trend keeps accelerating at a rapid pace, and it’s recently started to accelerate at a rapid pace. Today, I see more really amazing blogs, radio shows, video and websites devoted to the discovery of new trends and products than ever before.
And for the last time, yes, I get it, it’s not The New York Times! But, who the F cares! It’s damn good and written from a real insider’s perspective and very little of it is actually self-serving!
Which brings me to the point of this long-winded blog. As someone who is building a content platform, The News Funnel, for one specific industry (real estate), I see more of this trend towards self-publishing and social media content than perhaps anyone.
Therefore, today, I am proud to announce we have acquired one of the best content sites I have seen in a long time. It’s called The CRE APP Review and it represents everything I have written about in terms of the future of content. The founder, Dominic Zabriskie, is a real estate executive who created an awesome website to review and discover new real estate technology applications from the perspective of an "insider.”
Our plans are to keep the site exactly as it is and to create even more content with Dominic and his team. On top of that, we’re planning to expand into other aspects of real estate as well. It will remain a marvelous place for industry pros to discover new stuff. Everyday.
Welcome to The News Funnel team, Dominic! I am very proud to put my money where my mouth is and be a part of where the puck is heading, not where it’s been.
